Information We Collect

We do not sell or share what we record, and we do not ask for your name. Here is everything the site keeps:

• VIN lookups. When you check a VIN, our server sends it to NHTSA's public API to fetch the vehicle and its recalls. The VIN is part of the results page address (/vin/…), so it is recorded with that page in our page-view count (see below). We keep no other copy of it.
• Recall alert sign-ups. If you ask us to email you about recalls, we store your email address, the vehicle (year, make and model), the VIN if the form had one, and the time you signed up. We use them only to send the alerts you asked for, and every alert has an unsubscribe link.
• Amazon product links. Some pages link to products on Amazon. When you click a store link (Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy or eBay), we record the click: the page, the product link and its affiliate tag, the time, your browser type, the page that referred you, a per-tab session ID and your country, which our host works out from your IP address. We do not store the IP address itself.

Cookies and Analytics

We count page views with our own small script: the page address, the page that referred you, whether you are on a phone, tablet or desktop (from screen width), the time and a random session ID kept in your browser tab (sessionStorage) until you close it. It sets no cookies and records no IP address. The same session ID is attached to product-link clicks so we can tell how many visits lead to one.

To switch off both the page-view count and click recording in your browser, open any page with ?notrack at the end of the address (for example recallscanner.com/?notrack).

Third-Party Services

RecallScanner uses the NHTSA API to retrieve recall data. When you perform a VIN lookup, your request is processed through NHTSA's public API. We encourage you to review NHTSA's privacy policy for information about how they handle data.

Vercel hosts the site and, like any web host, may log standard request data (IP address, browser, page) while serving it. Recall alert emails, once sent, go out through an email delivery service.

Advertising

RecallScanner shows no third-party display ads. Some pages link to products on Amazon; if you buy through one of those links, Amazon may pay us a commission at no cost to you. Amazon sets its own cookies once you are on its site, under Amazon's privacy notice.
