2024 July summer time, the compressor started same issue as the temperature increased. All of a sudden, the car was started showing major “drivetrain error” and “high voltage battery error”. I have taken the car again back to the same dealership and this time the car was starting to show major system failures. I have kept BMW in the email loop and at the first instance itself I have called out that cooling issues can cause battery issues, and it happened exactly like that after 7 months. Car was with the dealership from 07/22/2024 mileage: 7896 to 07/24/2024. Dealership said this was just a software issue even though there were errors related to high voltage, after 3 days, dealership simply updated the software and cleared all the issue and related the car stating that everything fixed. I have attached the service appointment letter for this issue. It looks like they wanted me to cover the 12 months after delivery so that they can be safe with lemon law, and it proved true with next incident. After the 3 months, a terrific incident happened on [XXX] Mileage:10,561. I was taking my [XXX] daughter for a doctor’s appointment along with my [XXX} daughter and my wife. It was a short trip less than 5 miles from my home. While in the state highway, while driving ,all of a sudden the car lost all of its power car had 12 miles of electric range and 227 miles of gas range, I have photo proof from this time either from electric motor and from the gasoline engine and stalled and stopped in the middle of the road with the EXACT SAME problem on “drive train error” mentioned above serviced on 07/22/2024. There was a truck behind us and the driver had to sudden break not to rear end us. The situation was terrific, and I cannot explain it through letters here. My wife and my [XXX] panicked, and they had to went through the trauma. I was thrown into a situation by BMW and the since I purchased a costly brand-new car for my family and trusting BMW,still in dealer INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Vehicle shut off at a stop light and would not restart received a Drivetrain malfunction: Driving not possible. Call Roadside Assistance. message. Have had the vehicle two weeks and has only 710 miles on the odometer. The vehicle was stuck on the highway and unable to move or restart the vehicle the police had the vehicle towed out of the way. Very dangerous situation could have been hit by another vehicle very easily. The vehicle is currently stuck in my driveway until it can be towed to the BMW dealer for repair!

The vehicle first reported a drivetrain malfunction and the message said to continue driving with reduced engine performance. The vehicle did get us home. I tested it the following day and received the same fault after a couple of miles of driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, a 50 mile trip. After a couple of weeks the dealer stated that the vehicle was ready for pickup. I got in the vehicle and 1.5 miles later received a drive fault warning me to stop carefully and turn off drive ready mode. I was driving on a very busy narrow road looking for a place to pull over when the vehicle lost all motive power. Having no choice but to try and pull over very quickly as we were going up a hill. The police had the vehicle towed and returned us to the dealer. Losing all motive power without warning is I believe a serious safety issue. The vehicle has been with the dealer now 5 weeks with no resolution of the problem. I’ve told them that I want a full root cause investigation in writing before the vehicle is released back to me. I have zero confidence in the vehicle now.

Complaints are self-reported to NHTSA by owners and are not verified by the agency.

Full analysis: how to read the BMW X5 recall history
Year range, common components, complaint patterns, and how to use this page.

Understanding the BMW X5 recall history

The BMW X5 currently has 35 recall campaigns and 191 owner complaints indexed from the NHTSA public database. Each recall represents a formal campaign to fix a defect at no cost to the current owner. Owner complaints are self-reported incidents that haven't (yet) resulted in a recall but can indicate emerging patterns worth watching.

The most frequent recall categories for the X5 in our dataset are air bag (5), steering (3), and suspension (3). These clusters matter when you're shopping for a used X5: recalls in these systems tend to be the ones most likely to have been skipped by previous owners, because they aren't always visible during a routine test drive or pre-purchase inspection.

The tracked recalls span model years 2017–2026, with campaigns reported to NHTSA between 2017 and 2025. Not every model year carries every recall. Each campaign is scoped to a specific year range and often a specific build window, which is why a VIN lookup is the only way to know whether a particular X5 is actually affected by any of these campaigns.

NHTSA's complaint database for the X5 records 13 crash reports, 2 fire reports. Complaint data is unverified and shouldn't be read as a blanket condemnation of the model (large production volumes naturally produce more reports), but it is useful for spotting whether a specific defect has a serious real-world pattern behind it.

How to use this page

The safest path for an owner is to run your VIN through the checker above. A VIN query hits NHTSA's live API and tells you whether your specific X5 has an open, unresolved recall. If you're researching a used X5before buying, use the recall list below to understand the model's full history, then check the seller's VIN to see whether prior owners actually completed the free repairs. Many don't, and unresolved recalls can linger for years.

Figures are generated live from the RecallScanner dataset, which is sourced from NHTSA's public recall and complaint APIs and refreshed daily. RecallScanner is independent and not affiliated with BMW or any U.S. government agency.
