Summary

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Buick Envision vehicles. The affected vehicles received a replacement headliner as part of a repair. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant protection in interior impact."

Consequence

If the service parts do not have energy-absorbing foam blocks, there may be an increased risk of occupant injury in the event of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

When driving on the freeway at night in intermittently foggy conditions, I attempted to adjust the automatic high-beam controls on the center console screen in the vehicle. During this attempt, as I was selecting to deactivate the auto lighting function, ALL of the vehicle lights shut off at once, and the console and screen-based instrument cluster went completely black. I attempted to stop the vehicle as quickly as possible and struck a small reflector post at the side of the road. The instrument panel and lights restarted, but his incident could have easily resulted in a catastrophic loss of control, endangering myself and others. To my knowledge, no incidents or recalls of this sort have been reported for this model, but a recall for a similar malfunction was issued in late 2023 for some models of the Chevrolet Trax, Buick Envista, and Buick Encore GX. This vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others as of yet, but an insurance claim has been issued, so such an inspection may be forthcoming. No warning lamps or warning signals preceded this complete blackout of all the vehicle's lights and the main screen/instrument cluster. This malfunction appeared without warning and, in this case, during extremely dangerous, nighttime driving conditions.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

On 12/18/2025 at approximately 5:00 pm, during rush hour traffic, while driving 60 mph on the expressway, my car automatically downshifted to drive1, the engine revved up significantly and the car reduced power and had sluggish acceleration. It did not come out of Drive 1 until I was able to get off the expressway and put the car in park. The car is available for inspection upon request. I was panicking in heavy traffic and cars were honking at me as I could not speed up. I took my car to the dealer but he could not reproduce the exact problem. The vehicle or component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance or representatives. There were not any warnings or messages prior to the symptoms. This is the second time this has happened within the eight months that I have leased the car.

The contact owns a 2024 Buick Envision. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed and became stuck under the floor liner. The contact depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle however, the vehicle failed stop as needed. The contact pressed the park button and turned the vehicle off. The contact stated that the engine was smoking. The contact and her husband then exited the vehicle. The contact stated that it was a very scary moment due to the failure. The contact inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the accelerator pedal was stuck under the floor liner. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a defective floor liner. The dealer informed the contact that the floor liner needed to be replaced. In addition, the contact was informed that the repair was covered under recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 24E066000 (Vehicle Speed Control, Equipment). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 400.

The vehicle was taken in for the oil level not registering on the dip stick 5235 miles on the odometer, they said it was 2 quart oils low. They said they would do an oil consumption test and to bringv it back in 2000 miles. We took it back with an odometer reading of 7451 and it was again 2 quarts oils low. There is an oil consumption issue on this vehicle.

Prior to the first oil change which is recommended at 7500 miles, I check the oil and there was NO oil present on the dip stick...none, not a drop. I had to add 1 3/4 quarts to get it in the accepted range. We took the car for its normal 7500 mile oil change and informed the dealer, upon inspection and oil change they said nothing was wrong with the car. About 2000k miles after that oil change I checked the oil again and again it was well over a quart and 1/2 low. I added enough oil to get the oil level into the accepted range. I made an appointment with the dealer and they looked at the car and said it was 3/4 of a quart low upon arrival and want me to start an oil consumption study. My concern is if this car is using that much oil, its a matter of time before engine failure and what if this happens at speed or when I am on the expressway, it feels like a safety concern to me.

SERVICE BRAKES

While driving for approximately 2 1/2 hours with cruise set at 78. I did need to brake on occasion and then resume speed. For no apparent reason the car suddenly braked. Speed dropped to about 50 and then immediately resumed speed. No one was hurt. Things in the back seat pushed forward. I don’t know if it has anything to do with that incident but from them until I returned home, about 1 hour later my windows were fogging, I turned on the defrost about 3 times.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

Description of Safety Defect: While operating the vehicle at approximately 25-30MPH and make a right turn, the vehicle experienced a sudden and total loss of power/engine stall, accompanied by a "Check Engine" light and a "Reduced Engine Power" notification. This resulted in a near-collision on a public roadway. The vehicle's steering and braking response were significantly compromised during this event, creating an immediate life-safety hazard for the driver and passengers. Dealer/Manufacturer Response: The vehicle was recently in the possession of McGovern Buick GMC Westborough for service. Despite the vehicle exhibiting an active Check Engine Light (CEL), the dealership staff pressured the consumer to take delivery of the vehicle and drive it on public roads. The service advisor admitted in writing that the CEL was active but insisted the vehicle was "feel free to drive." Furthermore, the dealership attempted to falsify internal corporate safety notes to claim the consumer "insisted" on taking the vehicle, masking a known mechanical defect. This represents a willful suppression of a safety defect by a franchised dealer, which led directly to a hazardous operating condition. Injuries/Crashes: No crash occurred, but a near-miss was documented. Passenger experienced severe emotional distress due to the sudden loss of vehicle control in traffic.

Year range, common components, complaint patterns, and how to use this page.

Understanding the Buick ENVISION recall history

The Buick ENVISION currently has 4 recall campaigns and 11 owner complaints indexed from the NHTSA public database. Each recall represents a formal campaign to fix a defect at no cost to the current owner. Owner complaints are self-reported incidents that haven't (yet) resulted in a recall but can indicate emerging patterns worth watching.

The tracked recalls span model years 2017–2024, with campaigns reported to NHTSA between 2016 and 2024. Not every model year carries every recall. Each campaign is scoped to a specific year range and often a specific build window, which is why a VIN lookup is the only way to know whether a particular ENVISION is actually affected by any of these campaigns.

How to use this page

The safest path for an owner is to run your VIN through the checker above. A VIN query hits NHTSA's live API and tells you whether your specific ENVISION has an open, unresolved recall. If you're researching a used ENVISIONbefore buying, use the recall list below to understand the model's full history, then check the seller's VIN to see whether prior owners actually completed the free repairs. Many don't, and unresolved recalls can linger for years.

Figures are generated live from the RecallScanner dataset, which is sourced from NHTSA's public recall and complaint APIs and refreshed daily. RecallScanner is independent and not affiliated with Buick or any U.S. government agency.
